Objets Mito, edition 1 – Abid Javed

  • The Batsford Gallery 266 Hackney Rd England, E2 7SJ United Kingdom (map)

London-based ceramicist & designer Abid Javed launches ‘Objets Mito’ in its first Edition, a show unlocking mitochondrial biological narratives in the form of lighting and sculptural art objects.

From the 2nd – 6th May, Edition I showcases a new sculptural body of work, with a blend of two materials (clay and paper), realised as lighting objects and sculptures, inspired by the cellular powerhouse called mitochondria and its molecular space.

As a molecular biologist, Javed takes the scientific observations under the microscopic lens of molecules and cellular landscapes and reimagines them as sculptural bodies. Recognised for his ‘molecular objects’, the research scientist and sculptor has developed an identity by sharing his insights from the unseen world we live in, re-imagined as abstract, biomorphic forms.

Javed’s first show under the studio umbrella of Objets Mito invites viewers to experience the alien landscape of mitochondrial biology, where the mitochondriabecomes the chamber from which new forms and narratives emerge. Mitochondria (Mito for short) are cellular compartments in all living cells. The first Edition showcases the rich forms, often elaborate, as ‘Objets’, in the form of table lamps and wall lights and sculptures. Proceeding editions extend this narrative by celebrating mitochondrial biology through bespoke bridging of materials and collaborative artistic practices.

‘Instead of a collection, I wanted to create a new space, plant a seed if you will, that will eventually grow into its own vessel and body, organically. My vision for Objets Mito is to create objects by collaborating with artists, designers from different fields and the use of materials to re-imagine the mitochondrial biology that fuels us all living things every second. There are a whole host of architectural ideas, engineering feats and pure sculptural narratives that I wanted to tap into.’

About Abid Javed

Abid Javed is a research scientist, sculptor and designer based in east London. His studio practice bridges his background in molecular biology with sculpture design, exploring themes of cellular forms, molecules as he translates the microscopic world into abstract forms and objects. Javed’s ceramics are distinct in their appearance, drawing from references including 20th Century art and design, Islamic art and geometry.
