Just America – Vaughan Grylls

  • The Batsford Gallery 266 Hackney Road London, England, E2 7SJ United Kingdom (map)

Grylls was an artist ahead of his time.

Back in the 1980s, he was using streams of photos, jigsaw imagery, flashes of life and colour before the advent of digital video and photography. The difference between Grylls and the ubiquitous Insta world, is that he was using painstaking analogue and on a truly vast scale - many of his pieces would struggle to find a wall big enough. His rightful position at the vanguard of the image/photo revolution is only just now really beginning to be understood.

He returns to The Batsford Gallery with a show that eviscerates half a century of American culture and politics through drawing, photography and photo-montage. Highlights include 'Fentanyl Drive', an enormous, arresting digitally-altered photograph showing addicts on a Philly street as though from the window of a fast moving car. Spot figures from Michelangelos 'Pieta' (Pity) among them.

A must-see, especially in this year of the presidential elections.
